Dissection Day 5

Today we took a quiz over the frog dissection and we completed dissection week with the completion of the Crayfish or Starfish.

Crayfish dissection

Today was day 1 for the crayfish dissection.  Students observed the external portions of their crayfish and determined either they have a female or male crayfish.

Day 3 Frog Dissection

Today was the final day for the frog dissection for most bells (except 1 and 4).  Students were to complete the packet after clean up from the dissection.  This packet is due Thursday (Tomorrow)  Frog Dissection Packet

We will be doing smaller dissection Thursday and Friday of this week.

Day 1 Frog Dissection

Today we started our frog dissection  Students got into groups of 2 to 3 with a recorder.  I supplied Aprons and students were to supply their own gloves.  We started looking at the outside of the frog and mouth regions as seen here:  Frog Dissection External

Last Day Of OGT

Today we completed the OGT tests

Reminder that all students were to turn in their homework packet this week for grading and the pop up frog in their composition book for grading.

DISSECTION NEXT WEEK. bring gloves, apron, mask (if you need).  You will get ONE plastic apron from me but you must remember to bring it and not break it!!!

OGT Testing ALL week

This week we are taking the OGT tests.   By the end of the week each student will have seen me TWICE.  DUring this time they must have turned in their homework packet and finished their frog pop up and TURNED it in to me for grading!!!

Reminder Dissection next week.  Please bring gloves if your squeamish and an apron or large shirt.

GOOD LUCK on ALL your tests this week (especially SCIENCE).
You can do it!  We've worked hard all year!

No Warm Ups

There was no warm ups this week.   We will resume warm ups the week of April 13th due to:
Next week is OGT week
The following week we are dissecting and dont have time
The following week is spring break
The first week in April is intersession

Frog Dissection Preperation

Students are working on the pop up Frog activity to assist twith the Frog Dissection Starting the week after OGT (March 23rd)

It is recommended to bring an apron or a big shirt and gloves!!!

Composition Books

Today all students turned in their composition books to be graded.  Any books turned in after the students class will be considered late and will lose a letter grade.

Completion of Photosynthesis lab and turning in Lab Notebooks

Today we completed our Photosynthesis Lab started last week.  This included Title, Problem, Chart (filled in) Questions #1-5 and 1-13.

Students had the opportunity to make sure all the assignments were in their notebooks from the last two week and then the notebooks were turned in.
That list is:

  • Cell Cycle Part 2 Notes and Colored Circle with cut outs
  • Mitosis Activity (cut outs glued and labed)
  • Photosynthesis ( Notes, Purple Cut out, Yellow Cut Out)
  • Photosynthesis Lab (see above)
  • Respiration Notes (except bell 1 &2)

This week due to AIR testing and Snow days we only had ONE warm up:

Lab and Notes

Today due to the last two snow days our lab had been extended.  Today Bells 1 and 2 started the lab.  Bell 4 completed the lab including questions.

Next week all bells will complete the lab and notes and turn the composition book in Tuesday or Wed (Except Bell 4)

Mitosis Notes

Today we did a condensed version of Mitosis notes found here: CN notes Cell Growth & Division part 2  from the second part of this powerpoint Cell Growth& Division Part 2: Mitosis Notes

We then cut and paste examples of onion and fish cells going through mitosis as we dont have time to do the lab due to the snow days :(

Finishing Chloroplast Lab

Chloroplast Lab

Today we completed Procedure 1-12 today in class.  This included our drawings with labels and magnification that was set up yesterday in class.

We will complete this lab tomorrow with the salt water experiment as well as our conclusion (REE)

Completing Cell Membrane notes

Today our lab notebooks were returned with grades.  We then completed taking notes over the cell membrane that was started last Tuesday January 20th.  Look back on that date for the Class Notes sheet and the PowerPoint.

HOMEWORK was given due on Wed 1/28.   This homework has TWO PARTs.  You had time in class to complete the top portion.  At home you must complete the bottom portion either on the back or a separate sheet of paper.  A link can be found here:  Cell City Analogy

Friday Wrap Up

Today we took our weekly quiz.. Congrats to the groups in each class who won and did not have to take the quiz this week.

We then competed the Analysis for the Eggcellent Lab #1-4.

Students then made sure their notebooks were up to date using this list:  Lab Notebook Checklist  and were turned in for grading this weekend.

EXCEPT bell 2 due to the assembly today we will compete the Analysis on Monday and turn in our notebooks then.

Egg Lab Day 3

Today we completed the data collection portion of the lab by measuring circumpherence for day 2.

Following the next steps in the lab as posted on Friday and Tuesday, students created a graph of the data.

HOMEWORK:  if the student did not complete the graph in class, they were to complete the lab for homework.

Day 2 of Eggtastic Lab

Homework was turned in.  This was the cell coloring packet.  Today we looked at our eggs, determined which variable each group member would test, measured our eggs and added the variable.  The eggs will sit for another 2 days.





After completing the measurement of the egg and variable addition we took notes on the cell membrane.  We will complete these notes on Friday.

Completing a lab and preparing for one

Today we took our weekly quiz.  This week was on microscopes.

We then completed the Organelle of the day lab from Wed by finishing up the last 5 questions.

After that we set up for the lab for next week by taking putting an egg in a mason jar and covering it with vinegar to dissolve the shell over our three day weekend.

We set up the lab in our notebooks as follows:  Title (TOC), Purpose, Hypothesis, Chart.

Organelle of the Day- Cell Membrane and Nucleus

Today we worked on the Organelle of the Day lab, looking at our own cheek cells to visualize the cell membrane and nucleus.  The lab is found here:  Organelle of the Day-PM & N

The students composition lab notebook was set up like the picture below.  The students followed the directions and answered all questions and drawings in their notebook.

Cell Organelle Notes

A coloring packet was given for HOMEWORK today.  It is due Tuesday January 20th.
An example of how to do the coloring is below.  Grade is based on neatness.  Letters match color chosen.  Individual letters colored in, and completeness of packet.
